At Ánima Village in Los Cabos, a long ramp leads from the plaza and drops four meters into the ground, revealing Arte Abierto Baja—a 180-square-meter open-air gallery designed by Sordo Madaleno. The gallery features large-scale sculpture and site-specific installations, enclosed by walls rising over five meters while maintaining an open roof. The architecture contrasts with the surrounding terracotta pavilions and planted squares above, using rough concrete and a pigmented, bush-hammered finish to blend with the arid Baja California Sur landscape.
The space opens with an installation by Abraham Cruzvillegas, whose work often employs found materials. The gallery sits four meters below the plaza, creating a distinct yet connected experience within Sordo Madaleno’s broader masterplan for Ánima Village—a six-hectare development with climate-adapted planting and shaded pedestrian areas. The ramp serves as the threshold between the mixed-use development above and the gallery below, inviting visitors to explore both spaces.
